There is a particular quality of light in Finland that you will not find anywhere else. In summer it lingers past midnight — a soft gold that turns the lakes to mirrors. Finland's capital is a compact, beautiful city built on a peninsula surrounded by archipelago. Lapland and Rovaniemi: The Arctic North
Finland's north is one of the world's truly magical landscapes — ancient, silent and vast. Rovaniemi sits precisely on the Arctic Circle and is the official home of Santa Claus. Beyond town, wilderness stretches for hundreds of kilometres: reindeer, husky safaris, Aurora Borealis cabins, and Urho Kekkonen National Park.
Lakeland: Finland in Summer
A labyrinth of lakes, islands and waterways seemingly designed for summer. Savonlinna hosts a world-famous opera festival inside a medieval castle; Lake Saimaa shelters one of the world's rarest freshwater seals; and remote lake islands hide smoke sauna experiences you will remember forever.
Turku, Tampere and Porvoo
Turku, Finland's oldest city, opens onto an archipelago of 20,000 islands — the Archipelago Trail is one of Finland's greatest road trips. Tampere, built between two lakes, claims the title of Finland's sauna capital and hosts the world's only Moomin Museum. And Porvoo, an hour east of Helsinki, is one of the best-preserved wooden towns in Scandinavia.
When to Visit
Winter (Dec–Feb): snow, Aurora Borealis and Christmas in Lapland — book months ahead. Spring (Mar–Apr): long days, deep snow in the north, lower prices. Summer (Jun–Aug): the Midnight Sun, lake swimming, festivals and the archipelago. Autumn (Sep–Oct): ruska — the blazing autumn colours — and the first Aurora Borealis displays of the season.
Finland in 2026 is particularly special for Aurora Borealis hunters: the solar maximum means the Aurora Borealis is more frequent and vivid than at any point in the past decade.
Travel Smart
Helsinki-Vantaa is the main gateway; Lapland is under two hours by air. VR trains connect the major cities. Finland uses the Euro, English is widely spoken, and the remarkable jokamiehen oikeudet — Everyman's Right — lets you walk, camp and pick berries freely almost anywhere in the wilderness.
Finland has been voted the world's happiest country for seven consecutive years. The happiness is not found in statistics. It is found in birch trees, lake water, and the sauna at the end of the day.
